Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley in Talks to Direct ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ Movie
Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley are in negotiations to direct the “Dungeons & Dragons” movie for Paramount Pictures.

They’re replacing Chris McKay, who parted ways with the project to focus on the Skydance pic “Ghost Draft” starring Chris Pratt. The timing works out for the directing duo, as Daley and Goldstein recently left the Flash movie over creative differences, and Paramount moved quickly to jump at the chance to work with them.

Michael Gillio will be penning the script. Hasbro’s Brian Goldner and Stephen Davis are producing.

The film will be one of the first projects to go into production for the newly created AllSpark Pictures. Launched last October by Hasbro, the production company aims to transform itself into an industry player to rival Marvel Studios.

In addition to the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop roleplaying game, Hasbro’s lines of toys and games include Mr. Potato Head,

FX’s ‘A Teacher’ Limited Series Gets Green Light; Nick Robinson Joins Kate Mara As Co-Lead
FX has given a formal green light to A Teacher, a 10-episode limited series based on Hannah Fidell’s buzzy 2013 Sundance feature, starring and executive produced by Kate Mara. Additionally, Nick Robinson has been cast as a co-lead opposite Mara in the series, which has been in development at FX since last year. FX Productions is the studio.

Fidell, who wrote, directed and produced the 2013 film, will pen the adaptation, direct and executive produce the limited series.

A Teacher explores the story behind the mugshot of a female high school teacher caught in an affair with her male student, revealing the complexities and consequences of these illegal relationships.

Mara and Robinson star respectively as Claire, a popular young teacher at a suburban Texas high school, and Eric, an all-American high school senior.

Fidell executive produces with Michael Costigan and Jason Bateman of Aggregate Films, Danny Brocklehurst and Mara.

“Hannah Fidell is an exceptional filmmaker we have long admired for her intuitive ability to bring complex stories to life with depth and grace,” said Gina Balian, President, Original Programming, FX Entertainment. “We are thrilled to partner with Hannah, Kate Mara, Michael Costigan, Jason Bateman and Danny Brocklehurst to adapt A Teacher into a limited series for FX, with Kate leading an extraordinary cast along with Nick Robinson.”

“Working with FX – truly the home of all my favorite shows – on A Teacher is a dream come true,” said Fidell. “I couldn’t ask for a more perfect partner who, from day one, has understood and embraced the inherent complexities and nuance required for such subject matter.”

Robinson, who starred in features Love, Simon and Everything, Everything, was a series regular on the ABC Family series Melissa and Joey. Other credits include Native Son, Jurassic World, and Boardwalk Empire, among others. He’s next set to make his Broadway debut in the hit Aaron Sorkin adaptation of Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird, replacing the outgoing Will Pullen as Jem Finch in November.

Mara is repped by Wme, Mosaic, Viewpoint, Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern. Robinson is repped by UTA, Management 360, Savage Agency and Fred Toczek.

Winners and Losers on Night 1 of the Second Democratic Debates

Ten Democratic presidential contenders took the stage at the Fox Theater in downtown Detroit for the first night of the second round of the 2020 primary debates — and churned out a memorable, marathon debate.

The contest had offered the prospect of a faceoff between progressive champions Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. But instead of fighting, the two candidates with transformative plans for America stuck together, defending their bold agendas against the slings and arrows of can’t-do moderates, particularly former congressman John Delaney and ex-Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper.

Democratic Debates: Moderates Swing at Warren, Sanders; Williamson Sets Internet Ablaze

Anyone tuning into the Democratic primary debates on CNN expecting to see Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders take swings at each other was likely disappointed, but several less well-known candidates — Marianne Williamson in particular — garnered a perhaps unexpected amount of attention on the stage of 10 in Detroit on Tuesday night.

Warren, Sanders and Pete Buttigieg scored the most talking time, according to NPR’s calculation, in a sprawling, more-than-two-and-a-half-hour debate that covered health care, gun violence, immigration, trade, education and racism.

The two leading progressive candidates took a strong position advocating for Medicare-for-All. Sanders, calling the nation’s current health care system “dysfunctional,

At the Democratic primary debate on Tuesday, Marianne Williamson had a blunt response when asked to explain the $500 million she argues should be paid as reparations to the descendants of slaves: “Anything less than $100 billion is an insult.”

Asked by moderator Don Lemon why she says $500 billion was an appropriate amount, Williamson said “It’s $200 to $500 billion dollars payment of a debt that is owed. That is what reparations is.”

“It is time for us to simply realize that … when it comes to the economic gap between blacks and whites in America, it does come from a great injustice that has never been dealt with,” she continued. Then, referencing “40 acres and a mule,” Williamson added, “If you did the math today, it would be trillions of dollars, and I believe that anything less than $100 billion is an insult.” Watch the clip above.

CNN’s Democratic Debate Was a Frantic Lightning Round, But Still an Improvement (Column)

Tuning into the second round of Democrat debates on CNN, you’d be forgiven for briefly mistaking it for a boxing match. Bombastic highlight reels trumpeting a showdown between “The Progressives” (Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren), assorted moderates (chiefly Pete Buttigieg and Beto O’Rourke) and gauzy meme generator Marianne Williamson opened the night. Elizabeth Warren: Why Run for President Just to Say ‘What We Really Can’t Do and Shouldn’t Fight for’? (Video)
Elizabeth Warren scored one of the most talked-about moments during Tuesday’s Democratic primary debate, when she essentially asked former Maryland congressman John Delaney why he’s even bothering to run for president.

During the night, Delaney frequently criticized policies advanced by Warren, calling ideas like Medicare for All “impossible promises” and “more free stuff.” He later said that Democrats need “real solutions, not impossible promises” to win, and called Warren’s policy positions “fairy tale economics.”

Asked for a response by moderator Jake Tapper, Warren said: “I don’t understand why anybody goes to all the trouble of running for president of the United States just to talk about what we really can’t do and shouldn’t fight for,” she said. “I don’t get it.” The line was met with some of the biggest applause of the night.

Can ‘Hobbs & Shaw’ and ‘Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood’ Coexist at Box Office?
Looking ahead as the calendar turns to August, this coming weekend will be the last big one of the summer box office season. “The Lion King,” now a freshly-minted $1 billion hit, will continue to be a presence, “Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood” enters a crucial second weekend and Universal sends in its summer tentpole, “Hobbs & Shaw.”

“Hobbs & Shaw” isn’t looking like it will make “Jurassic World” numbers… at least domestically. The “Fast & Furious” spinoff is projected to see an opening in the low $60 million range, with Universal estimating a $57-60 million domestic launch. By comparison, 2017’s “The Fate of the Furious” opened to $98.7 million.

But over the last eight years, starting with “Fast Five,” the “Fast & Furious” series has taken more and more of its success from overseas. For “Fate of the Furious,” which made over $1 billion, only 18.3% of its total grosses came from domestic moviegoers.

Jake Tapper and CNN Totally Botched the Health Care Discussion

(Warning: This post contains spoilers for Tuesday’s finale of “The Bachelorette.”)

Hannah Brown’s season of “The Bachelorette” came to an end on Tuesday night, revealing the long-awaited fallout of the revelation that one of her final two suitors was in a relationship with another woman until a day before he left for the show.

Host Chris Harrison introduced the episode teasing revelations about “the massive destructive forces of lies and betrayal” and a proposal, which “in retrospect can only be described as cringe-worthy.”

The comments were a less-than-subtle nod to a widely circulated tell-all from contestant Jed Wyatt’s ex-girlfriend Haley Stevens, who confessed that she was in a four-month relationship with with the aspiring musician prior to the show. Stevens said he told her he only participated to further his career.

Sen. Bernie Sanders had strong words for Tim Ryan on Tuesday after the Ohio congressman claimed that Sanders couldn’t know whether Union members would get better health care coverage under Medicare For All than from their union plan.

During Tuesday night’s Democratic primary debate, Sanders said his Medicare for all plan would provide comprehensive coverage — particularly “dental care, hearing aids, and eyeglasses” for senior citizens. Ryan interrupted, saying “but you don’t know that. You don’t know that, Bernie.”

“I do know,” Sanders snapped back. “I wrote the damn bill.”

‘Bachelorette’ Creator Mike Fleiss Pays Wife $10 Million in Divorce Settlement, Restraining Order Dropped
An emergency domestic violence restraining order brought against “The Bachelorette” creator Mike Fleiss by his wife Laura Fleiss has been dropped as part of their divorce settlement, a person with knowledge of the situation told TheWrap Tuesday.

The former couple negotiated a deal that entitles Laura Fleiss to a $10 million settlement, which might have been higher had they not signed a prenuptial agreement. The agreement also stipulates that they will share equal custody of their 4-year-old son Ben. Their marriage comes to an end after 5 years.

Laura filed a restraining order in Los Angeles Superior Court on July 16, accusing Mike of threatening her and pushing her out of a truck in an incident she says took place at the couple’s Hawaii home the weekend of July 4. Pmk-bnc and Rogers & Cowan, Now Hollywood’s Biggest PR Firm — But Is That Better?

When major PR firms merge, they’re usually consolidating in order to stay on top. It’s a little different for former standalones Pmk-Bnc (which has merged at least four times in 40 years) and Rogers & Cowan: Both are owned by the publicly traded Interpublic Group (2018 revenue: $9.71 billion). Now, they will form a single firm (yet to be named) that will represent more than 500 clients and 30 brands.

So why the change? The combo creates a more impressive client list, and will allow them to trim the expenses and other redundancies that come when two entities merge. It’s the easiest and fastest way to become bigger while meeting the demands of their corporate overlords.

Of course, bigger is not always better. Still, when the new company officially launches January 1, it will dwarf Kelly Bush and Mara Buxbaum’s ID-pr. It will also become one of the top 20 PR firms in the world,
